Fourth of July Safety Tips to Follow!

The Fourth of July is finally here! Let the celebrations begin! Many people have the day off and usually plan a special day out celebrating with family and friends! Some other plans may include going to the beach, attending fireworks, relaxing with friends and family by the pool or firing up the barbecue!

No matter what your plans are for July 4th, The American Red Cross wants everyone to have an enjoyable yet safe Fourth of July! They have issued a few simple steps that can insure you and your family stays safe this festive holiday!

Beach Safety: If you’re planning on attending the beach tomorrow, be sure to check the weather and water conditions before you leave and throughout the day. Also, only swim in designated areas and where lifeguards are present at ALL times. Also, watch the sun! You should limit the amount of time you spend in the direct sunlight between 10-4. Drink a lot of water and avoid caffeine and all alcoholic beverages while being in the sun. Make sure to wear plenty of sunscreen and sunglasses!

Other tips:
Actively supervise children at all times - even if a lifeguard is present. Stay within arm's reach of young children when they are in the water.
Have weak swimmers wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket. Don't rely on water wings or inflatable toys.
Always enter shallow water feet first. Dive only in areas marked safe for diving.

Rip Currents: Be aware of the danger of rip currents at all times!

Other tips:
If caught in a rip current, swim parallel to the shore until out of the current. Once free, turn and swim toward shore.
If someone can't swim to the shore, they should shout for help, float or tread water until free of the rip current and then head toward shore.
Stay at least 100 feet away from piers and jetties. Permanent rip currents often exist near these structures.

Fireworks Safety: With every 4th of July celebration come fireworks! Here are some tips to follow to stay safe.
Never give fireworks to small children and always follow the instructions on the packaging.
Keep a supply of water close by as a precaution.
Make sure the person lighting fireworks always wears eye protection.

Store fireworks in a cool, dry place away from children and pets.
Never throw or point fireworks toward people, animals,

Grilling Safety: If you’re planning on heating up the BBQ tomorrow, be sure to follow these tips!
Always watch the barbecue grill when in use.
Never grill indoors - not in a house, camper, tent or any enclosed area.
Make sure children and pets stay away from the grill.
Keep the grill out in the open, away from the house, the deck, tree branches or anything that could catch fire.
Use the long-handled tools especially made for cooking on the grill to keep the chef safe.
Never add charcoal starter fluid when coals have already been ignited.

How To Keep Glass Shower Doors Clean!

What are the most effective ways to clean glass shower doors?  If you have glass shower doors, you may have noticed that sometimes water spots develop on the inside of the door. Here are some tips on how to clean your shower doors and have them looking more beautiful than ever before!

First, you should never use bristle brushes, abrasive sponges or scouring powder on either the glass or metal parts of the shower doors. Also, do not use abrasive cleansers or cleaners containing ammonia, bleach, acids, waxes, alcohol or solvents on the metal part of the shower door. Your best bet to remove water spots from the door is using a Mr. Clean “magic eraser”, a dampened fabric-softener sheet or a microfiber cloth with either water or white vinegar.

White vinegar can also be poured onto paper towels or cloths then rung out well and then you can stick them to your glass shower doors and leave them there for 15 minutes. If none of these products work, you may need to use something a little more heavy duty like Kaboom Foam-Tastic.

Another tip to remember is to always wipe down your shower doors after a shower. You can simply use a towel or a squeegee.

Glass Shower Doors vs. Shower Curtains: Which Do You Prefer?

Many people prefer glass shower doors over shower curtains for many reasons. Glass doors keep water inside the shower more effectively than a shower curtain, they don’t omit the toxic smells that plastic curtains release, they don’t need to be replaced periodically like curtains and liners, and they can be easily cleaned and don’t build up mold like curtains do. Although, there are still many who don’t know who convenient glass shower doors can be!

Shower doors are made of safest type of glass, tempered glass. This is required by federal, state, and local building codes and it is designed to break into small pieces which lower the possibility for a very harmful injury. Tempered glass is resistant to direct impact, but can begin to shatter or fracture if it is hit on the edge or corner.

To ensure that your shower door is tempered glass, check to see if the two pieces of glass are sealed together with a clear piece of resin. Also, look for a label stamped on the glass. Often times, tempered glass is labeled to satisfy specific building codes.

One of the only ways tempered glass can explode is if the glass had a flaw in it and was under stress in the frame. To ensure your safety, periodically check your shower door hardware to make sure fasteners are secure and tighten them if needed. Also, inspect glass regularly for any chips or cracks, especially around the edges and notches. If you see any chips or cracks, replace the glass panel immediately.

Here are a couple basic tips and steps to adding a shower door to your bathroom!

First, you must decide what kind of door you want. Larger shower stalls usually use sliding-type doors, while standard shower stalls usually use swinging-hinge type doors.  Correct size doors is important as well.  Make sure you not only measure your stall height, but also be aware that you need two width measurements. You’ll need one for the top of the stall width and one for the bottom of the stall width.

Next, make sure the door frame finish matches the rest of your bathroom. Aluminum frame finishes usually come in bronze, nickel, brass and silver. Also, look for a shower door that is easy to install. Some quick-install type doors require no drilling of the shower walls at all!

What You Need To Know About Flag Day!

Many Americans look forward to Memorial Day followed by Independence Day in the beginning of July to truly kickoff the summer. However, most people forget about the celebration of the birthday of the stars and stripes, better known as Flag Day! Today, June 14, 2012 is Flag Day! Most Americans aren’t even aware that Flag Day exists let alone what the day represents!

Although Flag Day isn’t a federal holiday, it still has significant meaning behind it. June 14th is a historic date because in 1777, the Continental Congress passed an official resolution that the flag of the United States would be 13 alternating red and white stripes and that the Union would be thirteen white stars I a blue field to represent a new constellation.

Although the American Flag has been altered over time, the flag still holds the stars and stripes and symbolizes free people!
